A dear friend of mine is having her baby shower/blessing way  in just a few weeks. The instructions on the invitation are to make a bead for her to add to her birth necklace. The idea is for her to feel loved and comforted by her friends even when we’re not around during her pregnancy and labor.  As you can imagine, I think this tradition is the greatest and can’t wait to make the best, most beautiful bead for her to wear. My ideal for jewelry is as a meaningful talisman and a reminder of those we care for and who care for us. Jewelry connects people when it’s used best.

Sometimes, when I get lost in the business side of things, I can forget what makes brings me joy about jewelry and just focus on technique and efficiency and numbers. All good things, all necessary things. But it’s so good to have these projects, like blessing way beads to remind me why I truly enjoy what I’m doing. Because I love my friend, and jewelry gives me a way to express it.

Got to make a personal piece today, a blessing way bead for my dear friend Ren. Sure, it’s not really a bead, it’s more of a charm. But hopefully it will still work as a reminder of friends and love.
